What I Want You to Know

Maybe you know me. Maybe you don’t.
Perhaps you’ve heard my name, and maybe you won’t.
I was but a man and a weak one at that.
My time here was short, not much to look at.
I had my fair share of troubles and pain.
I’ve seen darkness, nightfall, blood, sweat, and rain.
Like others before me and those who will follow,
I in part was a creature of sorrow.
Fallen I was, like the world I called my own.
Now little is mine, just this headstone.
But my message to you is not meant to be heavy.
The earth you live on is like that already.
I mean to speak of tender detail,
to comment on the sweet nuance it entails.
For you must know as cruel as existence was to me,
it was not completely without sympathy.
Yea within the time with which I was given,
I’ve been comforted, loved, held, and forgiven.
I cherished the sunlight; felt the ground under my feet.
I had friends of my own, my life was complete.
Cradled by stars, been lost in a song.
Learned to distinguish between righteous and wrong.
Fell for another. Felt our hearts intertwine.
We still lie together in this marble shrine.
I gave what I had, whatever that means.
Accomplished something I saw in my dreams.
Don’t take this for anything more than it’s worth,
but between the hell, you’ll find heaven on earth.
